Decorating Kids Rooms
Everyone has their own way of dealing with things like
decorating kids rooms. Ideas for decorating kids rooms
should be fun and exciting and include the kid's ideas as much
as possible.
Unless you are planning on redecorating your child's room
every few years, the easiest thing to do is to create rooms
that grow with your kids in an age appropriate way. Talk to
your children to discover which activities and
fairytales they most enjoy; which colors are their
favorites; and what kind of interior
decorating theme they can identify wtih.
For the children to get the most out of their rooms,
don't force your personal preferences on them.
Allow the kids to express their opinion about
possible themes, colors, fabrics they enjoy, and how they want
to display their personal stuff.
Even at a young age, your children are unique
individuals. As their peronality develops, they will
benefit from having their rooms decorated as an expression
of who they are. It is reasonable to set some kind
of limits but the goal is to give the kids their
special and personal space in your home. A place they know is
just for them.
Ideas for Decorating Kids Rooms
Because kids do more in their rooms than sleep, it is
advisable to make their rooms as multi-functional as
possible. Examples: a play area with shelves for toys, a
reading area with book storage, display, and a comfortable
chair; and an entertainment area with TV, VHS player, DVD
player, CD player, or radio at a convenient height and with age
appropriate controls.
Storage is a priority and shelves can be dressed up with
baskets, see-through containers, and colorful bins to add
interest. Plenty of shelves and racks in the closet with
multi-levels will grow with your child's wardrobe and provide
storage for bulky items that don't need to be out all the
time.
When choosing lighting for your child's room, you'll want to
provide task lighting for reading and homework that is easy for
your kids to use, general lighting for play, quiet time light
perhaps on a dimmer switch, and well placed nightlights.
Theme or no theme, keep the window treatment as simple as
possible. Try to get as much natural light into the room as
possible and use shorter curtains, shades, or blinds for
privacy as needed. Washable fabrics and patterns are the best
and can easily be repeated throughout the room in items like
dust ruffles, pillows, lampshades, and bed spreads.
Kids Rooms Decorating Ideas
Washable semi-gloss or gloss finish paint is one of the best
ideas for decorating kids rooms. Simple kids room decorating
can be easily achieved with paint and wallpaper. Add textures
and colors with fancy borders at the top of the walls, or paint
clouds, stars, sun and moon on the ceiling. You are only
limited by time, imagination and budget - so get creative and
get your kids involved in the process as much as possible.
Suggest some theme ideas for decorating kids rooms to them
that you want to tackle. There are unlimited ideas out there
but here's a few suggestions to get you started: space
travel, starry night, rainbows, angels, airplanes, trains,
Thomas the Train, race cars, boats, sailing, under the sea,
fishing, sports, baseball, football, golf, prince or princess,
cave man, jungle, dinosaurs, dragons and wizards.
Wall treatments can be soothing and calming neutral colors
to murals that draw your kids into the world of imagination.
Keep it as simple as you like or make it as elaborate as you
want. Your children will appreciate any effort to give them a
special place to hang out. Furniture should be washable or have
washable covers, durable, and sturdy. Safety is just as
important as function and design when thinking of ideas for
decorating kids rooms.
When you allow your kids to express themselves with a theme
that makes them feel good about themselves and their
environment, you have an opportunity to do something
memorable for you and your children. Have fun, be brave, be
patient, and enjoy.
