Decorating Ideas for the Home

When someone wants my help with decorating ideas for the home, the first thing I like to do is get to know more about them and their living or working space in question; especially if they have been there for awhile.  I observe objectively as much as possible the daily routines within the space and ask questions to gain clarity in understanding why some things are done in a certain way.

2.  Walls of Change: painting your walls is an easy and cost effective option for adding new color or changing a color theme. Paint effects, wallpaper, stencils, and borders can be combined or used individually to impart new textures, create emphasis, and unify within a common decorating theme.
   
3. Refurbishing Furniture: with new colors and textures in a room or new window dressing, your furniture may need to be updated to fit in. Slipcovers offer a very affordable way of doing this with upholstered furniture. Finishes and colors can be changed on tables, chairs, and other wood based pieces with paint or stains.
   
4. Devotees of Accessories: accent items come in all varieties from rugs, art, light fixtures, pillows, casual throws, and other decorative items. Any area can be changed with colorful items adding designs and textures to a background color scheme. Baskets, candles, and other accessories add interest.
   
5. Personalize with Collectibles: every season and every occasion can be dressed up with fun collectibles out of your personal collections. Dolls, plates, whimsical bears and toys, antiques or treasures from your childhood can all help make your interests part of your home decorating results. The more YOU there is in your home, the more you will like it.

Any room can be changed in a short amount of time with these five basic home decorating ideas, your favorite things and your personal preferences in color, style, comfort, and detail.

Home decorating is all about turning a living space into a personalized environment where you feel at ease and at home. Shared spaces can be a reflection of all occupants or more geared toward function - whichever makes more sense. For example, the family breakfast nook should be very homey and comfortable for any kids and adults while the formal dining room can be decorated more for the important dinner functions beyond family and friends; especially if business entertaining is a big part of your life.

You home is your castle and refuge from the rest of the world. The importance you give your living environment makes a difference in how you feel about yourself and your station in life. When you give yourself the things that matter most to you, and indulge in as many little luxuries as you may afford, there is a psychological benefit derived.

The Purpose of Decorating My Home

Interior design and decoration is not so much about 'showing off' as it is about 'inviting in'. The strategic use of design elements such as color, form, and light join with environmental sounds and echos bouncing off surfaces, textures and shapes to produce a unique living space that describes a lifestyle. Visitors to my home feel they know me better after viewing my personal spaces.

Understanding how people use the spaces and respond to the design elements I have devised, encourages me to demonstrate certain interior decorating skills that are both practical and aesthetically pleasing. I like to show off an effective use of an odd space or a clever decorating deception whenever possible.

By following an interior design plan for our entire house, I have been able to come up with new interior decorating ideas while staying within my budget and my timetable. Old houses like mine have a lot of quirks to be minimized or camoflauged while at the same time there are many fine features to be accentuated.

As our family changes over the years, new interests come and go, and our tastes change as well. My goal in decorating our home is to reveal the best of our lifestyle and minimize our environmental and personal flaws as much as possible. To me, that's the whole point of devising decorating ideas for the home.
